Oswego, NY (May 31, 2017) – The winged supers of the International SuperModified Association (ISMA) will make a quick turn around after the May 27 Jack Murphy Memorial on Saturday. The head down (or up) the NYS Thruway to Lancaster Speedway for the second event on the 2017 schedule. It’s the first visit to that five-eighth mile Western NY oval since 2003.
ISMA has a rich and storied history at Lancaster with their first officially sanctioned event in 1978, which was won by the late Jim Shampine. Over the four decades that races were run there were numerous winners that pulled into victor y lane, some scoring their very-first career ISMA win at that track.
Names like Shampine, Heveron, McLaughlin, Warren, Gosek Michaels, Morton, Nelson, McKnight, and Ritskes all recorded one win. Multiple winners include Joe Gosek (3), Dave McKnight (2), Chris Perley (2), with the New England legend Russ Wood winning five features.
All the features, including the upcoming June 2 event were 50 lappers except Doug Heveron who went 82 laps in 1982. Bentley Warren went 84 laps in 1984. The tradition of laps matching the year ended there.
With a considerably new group of drivers competing alongside the ISMA vets, it should be an exciting day of racing. Lancaster is also the first leg of the Triple Crown Series for the winged cars. The first non-winged show was May 13 at Oswego. A minimum of $27,000 in point fund money will be split between two separate championships.
