SWEET VICTORY FOR DAVE GRUEL IN THE STEVE MILLER 16

Oswego, NY (July 7, 2012) – Car owner Steve Miller began his supermodified career in 1971. Over the years he has fielded many cars with many drivers aboard and his car, nicknamed the Sweet Sixteen, has been a familiar site at Oswego, all over the northeast and in Canada. But there was one place the team hadn’t visited over the five decades and that was victory lane. Saturday night at the ISMA King of Wings, that all changed. When Miller’s driver, Texan Paul White, couldn’t make the trip, Steve called Dave Gruel, whose non-winged number 50 was not running with a wing, and asked him to drive the uniquely designed blue 16. The rest is history. Gruel jumped aboard, drove the car to a heat win and picked the second starting spot for the 50-lapper.
Gruel said later that he had one plan. To get out front and go hard. Fifty laps later, Steve Miller had his first career win as a car owner and Gruel, his first ISMA feature win. He definitely deserved the King of Wings title this night.
Standing in victory lane with his King of Wings apparel, Gruel was more than elated. “Unbelievable. I just can’t believe this. It’s awesome.. For Steve Miller and the whole team who have been racing all this time, to get their first win with them in the first time in the car. And to win with an awesome Kevin Enders motor in it – that combination made the car just unbelievable. I think I led the whole thing. I said I’m just going to stick it out there and do whatever I can to get out front on the first lap. Then I figured I’d push it on every single lap as hard as I could. I didn’t have any idea how far out I was. I had a scary deal up there when I think McKnight was trying to get his lap back. Luckily we had tires at the end of the race. Today was my first time in the car. Steve’s driver wasn’t able to make it. I’m sure he won’t be too happy. I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped make this happen.”
Moving into second through some heavy traffic and some attrition up front was Johnny Benson Jr. in the PATCO 74. He might have liked to move up one more spot, but considering the circumstances, he was happy in second.
“It’s pretty cool. I thought we might be able to win but we picked tenth and it was tough. The PATCO team did a good job. I love these supers. I even built one of my own and wrecked it so I’m back driving for Brad. I thought the race went pretty well. We started tenth, and got bottled up a little bit there. But the caution flew when it needed to and it put me up there where I wanted to be. I just didn’t have enough. The 16 was just really, really fast. It was a good win for him. I hear it’s their first win and that’s great. It’s really cool to be here to see that. You never want to finish second but it this case it’s pretty cool.”
Charlie Schultz, the 2009 King of Wings winner, was pleased with a podium finish as his luck had dropped off at Oswego after that win. “It would have been nice to get a repeat. Dave and I talked this week about the last six times we’ve been coming up here and we pretty much stunk. It’s been bad from drop of the green We made some wholesale changes on the car for this race. We unloaded and it was pretty fast. I got third fast. To come out with a top three and be back on the podium is great. Thanks to whole team and Dave and Lori May for standing by me. And, thanks to the fans for coming out.”
A full day of qualifying greeted the fans after a early rain shower cleared to a beautiful day. First the Oswego Speedway track record held by Chris Perley was broken by Xtreme sprinter Jason Cox with a 15.125 in the anticipated time trials. Rob Summers, in the 11, was fastest super with a 15.349. Then ISMA heats were won by Moe Lilje, Bob Magner and Dave Gruel and the consi win went to Dave McKnight. Finally the top twelve redraw lined up the field with Lilje and Gruel on the front row.
And, as was his goal, Gruel powered to the lead at the drop of the green, pulling quickly away from Lilje and the pack. By lap 16 the Sweet Sixteen was nipping at the back of the field as Lilje, Randy Ritskes, Lou Cicconi, Jeff Locke, Charlie Schultz, Timmy Jedrzejek and more were racing for position behind.
By the midway mark, with no yellows flying, it was evident that Benson was the man on the move, now up to fifth behind Jeff Locke who held fourth with Gruel, Lilje, and Ritskes still the top three.
Mayhem broke out just into lap 29 when four cars jammed up in the second turn taking out Lilje, Joe Gosek in the May 77, Jeff Holbrook and Dave McKnight.
Lilje, the second place runner at the time described the incident. “We went into the corner and there were a few lappers and the leader dicing it up pretty good. I don’t know what happened to start it but two or three cars got sideways and I didn’t have anywhere to go. I caught a wheel and got her into the fence.”
While waiting for the cleanup, defending KoW driver Mike Lichty went to the pits, not to return. Said Lichty later, “There’s something in the motor. It’s been running hot lately. Time trials went well. We were second quick and we were still tight too. I don’t know, when we’re on, we’re on badass and nobody can touch us. When this things off, it’s definitely off.”
The order on the restart changed to Gruel out front with two lap cars separating him from Locke, Benson, Schultz and Lou Cicconi in the top five. A quick yellow ensued which found Jason Spaulding into the pits and returning at the tail.
When the green stuck, nothing was going to mar Gruel’s plan to stay out font as his car owner Miller paced a groove of his own in the pit asphalt watching.
With less than ten laps to go, both driver and car owner had to suffer through one more yellow, which took second place runner Jeff Locke out of the picture. Locke said later he just got in too deep in two with his 37 pushed to the pits for a 13th place instead of a possible second.
Back underway for the last time, Gruel just walked away from Johnny Benson and Charlie Schultz as Lou Cicconi and Timmy Jedrzejek moved up into top five spots.
The cheer from the crowd was thunderous as Gruel crossed under the checkers all alone, with Benson, Schultz, Cicconi and Timmy J a distance behind.
Cicconi, with one ISMA win to date in 2012, wasn’t exactly happy with fourth. “We got a lucky fourth again. There was a lot of attrition out there and I’m surprised I wasn’t one of them. The car just doesn’t run. Something’s wrong with the motor and I’m just going to have to change it. It’s flat.. We’ve tried and changed everything. Thank god a lot of guys ahead of me dropped out. I had nothing for them.”
On the flip side, Timmy Jedrzejek was content with his fifth. “This is good. We’ve struggled the last couple of races to start the season. We were all scratching our heads a little. We made some big strides today on the pack with the car and I think we’re all pretty please with it. Now we just have four more positions to gain now. All in all I think myself and the whole team is excited about going to the Hy-Miler in a couple of weeks. I think we have a more comfortable car than we did a few weeks ago.”
Mark Sammut, Ben Seitz, and Bobby Bond were the last cars in the lead lap in sixth through eight. Sprint car driver Sondi Eden finished ninth in her first ever super ride at Oswego and Bob Dawson was tenth.
Oswego notes…35 supers in the pits. Early scratches were Kody and Ray Graham, Eddie Witkum (motor), Rich Reid, and Dan Bowes… Bobby Haynes Jr. struggled with the 48 but could not make the consi…Mike Ordway Sr., slowing to pull into the pits in the consi, got rear-ended into the wall, wiping out the front end of the 61…Kelly Miller, driving his own 81, was eliminated from an early consi crash…Rob Summers, who clocked a 15.349 in the Miller 11 in time trials, brushed the wall in the feature and lost a left front tire, exiting on lap 24..Randy Ritskes pulled the 88 out of third place just past halfway with motor problems as did Tim Ice in the 65.

Oswego, NY (July 19, 2017) - On July 15, the ISMA Board of Directions held a morning meeting at Jennerstown Speedway to discuss the race that had been scheduled at New London-Waterford Speedbowl. The decision had been made originally to wait and see how the opening of that Connecticut oval was being affected by events that had transpired there earlier in the year.
Jennerstown, PA (July 15, 2017) - At the beginning of the 2017 ISMA race season, P&L Motorsports had found the new driver they had been looking for to run the Lee and Pam Vinal 21. The Vinals had campaigned a car on the ISMA circuit for over four years with several drivers, but had not picked up that elusive first win.
Chelmsford, Mass driver Jon McKennedy, who did not have a potential super ride for this year, had been the one asked to drive the car full-time in 2017. In a racing career that had spanned 20 years, Jon had competed in the winged supermodifieds for a number of years but only one or two were full-time seasons. The talented driver had built up an impressive resume in the asphalt modified divisions in New England with numerous wins and multi-championships to his credit. Along the way he had also accumulated seven ISMA feature wins, jumping into a competitive car on occasion when available and usually having success.
Oswego, NY (July 3, 2017) – In 2016 the ISMA lightning fast supers returned to the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania to an old haunt Jennerstown Speedway after a nine-year hiatus. Sixteen previous appearances had been made at that .522-mile oval over a span of years that ranged from 1988 to 2007. The 2016 return was a much-anticipated and successful one. This year’s July 15 visit should be one not to miss as the drivers and teams have a new basis to work from.
